Memorial Day Poetry

Here are a few words from Col. Oliver North

They Did Their Share

On Veteran’s Day we honor
Soldiers who protect our nation.
For their service as our warriors,
They deserve our admiration.

Some of them were drafted;
Some were volunteers;
For some it was just yesterday;
For some it’s been many years;

In the jungle or the desert,
On land or on the sea,
They did whatever was assigned
To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn’t.
They defended us everywhere.
Some saw combat; some rode a desk;
All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty,
For low pay and little glory,
These soldiers gave up normal lives,
For duties mundane and gory.

Let every veteran be honored;
Don’t let politics get in the way.
Without them, freedom would have died;
What they did, we can’t repay.

We owe so much to them,
Who kept us safe from terror,
So when we see a uniform,
Let’s say "thank you" to every wearer.

  1. Last November I met Lt. Col. Oliver North in Branson, MO. I had the privilege to tell him to his face that he is my favorite commentator. He thanked me for my compliment, then returned the compliment. Since I was wearing my US Air Force Veteran baseball cap, he thanked me for service. Then, he conducted a TV interview with Sean Hannity. My wife and I had the privilege to stand behind Col. North has he was interviewed. That special moment in time will be remembered by me for the rest of my days.

    Today, we had a special ceremony at my son in-law's home. We had a reading and then read the names of our ancestors who served the USA in the military. My dad's name (he was an ex-POW) was read along with my uncle's name. It was a special moment to remember two great patriots who served this country with pride and without hesitation.
